I will be moving real soon from the house my cats were born 7 years ago to an apartment on the 4th floor with a big outside terrace, what they call here a "penthouse walk-up apartment".  Any recomendations as to how to adapt them to the new place?

make sure all their toys are taken an play with the toys and the cats when you move to get them confortable in their new surroundings.  Stay with them more then usual the first few weeks and especially when you feed them.  After a while they will get used to the new home.

As long as your stuff with all its scents are on it, the cat shouldn't have too much of a problem other than layout issues with the house. He/she should get used to it in a matter of days and I don't believe it differs with age. They may be stressed for a while before getting used to it so give him/her space and be extremely kind and patience with him/her until he/she adjusts.

I know that you've received a few responses already but I wanted to tell you my experience with moving. I suggest that you let your cats enjoy a room in the house (like a spare bedroom) for a few days. Keep their litter, food, favorite toys, blanket, etc in there with them. And you visiting them often of course. This way they can get use to the sounds and smells of the house before they get the full run. This has worked wonderfully for me.I've heard horror stories, that when people move their cars hide for several days. So this is just a suggestion that has worked great for me. It did not stress my cats out at all and I didn't have to worry about them getting into anything or running out an open door while I was moving, etc. This way they got use to the house sounds, etc.   Good luck!

This is a good advice, most important, stay with your pets for as long as you can for the first month or so.

When we get a new cat my wife puts butter on it's paws. She says this will make them stay home, it seems to work. Good luck
